Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasy is plastic surgery to reduce the size of the labia. It is for women who seek to improve the appearance and/or function of their genitals, and is also used to repair congenital abnormalities. The goal is vaginal rejuvenation. Importantly, the labia provide protection and sexual comfort. Patients are typically satisfied with their results.

The size, color and shape of the labia vary from person to person, and are affected by childbirth, aging and accidents. Childbirth can cause labial tears. Many women seek this surgery because the inner lips (labia Minora) which surround the vaginal opening, protrude from the outer lips (labia Majora), and become particularly noticeable when standing, becoming more visible when they are in a bathing suit or work out clothes. Some women seek this surgery due to difficult hygiene issues, soreness and chafing, and discomfort during exercise or sexual intercourse. They commonly complain of feeling self-conscious and not sexy, especially where there is asymmetry.

Interestingly, with the increase in bikini and Brazilian waxing the size, pigmentation and asymmetries become more noticeable, and can generate insecurity. And the trend of wearing tight pants can emphasize hypertrophied labia. Labiaplasty is a personal choice, as well as the fastest growing plastic surgery procedure throughout the world. With these cultural changes, labiaplasty is increasingly acceptable.

Regardless of your motivation, you may be a good candidate if you are an adult in good health and have discomfort or a desire to improve your appearance.

The Procedure

Labiaplasty can be performed under local anesthetic, sedation or general anesthesia. Usually it is done under local anesthesia and oral sedation as an office procedure. During the procedure the labia are trimmed.  Various techniques may be used based on your anatomy, and your particular issues.

All surgical procedures entail some risk but the risks are low. Complications are uncommon, and can include bleeding and infection. There is minimal and cosmetically acceptable scarring.

Recovery

There may be swelling. Pain is controlled with medication first, followed by over the counter pain relief. You may need to stay home from work for a week, and avoid heavy lifting and exercise as well as intercourse for 3-4 weeks.

Labiaplasty can be performed safely and successfully in an office setting. Most importantly, you and your plastic surgeon at Cary Med Spa and Wellness must communicate so that the surgeon knows what you consider ideal appearance, for the procedure to be successful.  We offer compassionate care and excellent surgical skills and knowledge to help you achieve your goals.
