IPL Rejuvenation at Cary MedSpa
IPL (intense pulsed light) is a proven form of skin rejuvenation that can improve the effects of sun damage, hormonal redness, loss of collagen and elastin, and skin conditions such as acne and rosacea. There is very little downtime associated with IPL rejuvenation and because it is considered gentle it can be done in combination with other superficial treatments like chemical peels and dermaplaning.
What skin conditions can an IPL treatment help?
IPL can be very effective in diminishing many types of skin discolorations such as hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, freckles, sun damage, age spots, liver spots, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by acne, and spider veins.
How does IPL work?
IPL rejuvenation uses intense broadband light, which delivers energy to both the superficial and deep layers of the skin, the epidermis and dermis, while saving the surface from being damaged. IPL has been proven to firm the skin (boosting collagen and elastin production) remove age spots, treat melasma, and even remove visible blood vessels. IPL can also help improve skin tone and texture.
How is IPL rejuvenation performed?
The size of the area to be treated will determine how long the appointment will be. A chin treatment is approximately 20 minutes from start to finish, whereas a full leg treatment (for both legs) takes longer, between 30-45 minutes. Protective eye wear is worn by both the client and the therapist.
To begin, a layer of cool gel is applied to the area being treated. The IPL is turned on and the applicator is placed on the skin. As it works, the skin absorbs the light energy and heats up causing a snapping sensation as if a rubberband is being snapped against your skin. There may be some redness and/or swelling following the procedure, however it is safe to apply makeup and go back to work. Dark spots may appear darker but will flake off. Sun exposure should be absolutely avoided following any skin rejuvenation treatment, including IPL.
Between 4 and 6 treatments are recommended for the best, noticeable results.
IPL for acne
The high intensity pulsed light may cause a reduction in the growth of bacteria and inflamed oil glands. It may also help to reduce pigment cells to remove the hyperpigmentation that results after the acne pimples resolve. Finally, it may reduce the capillaries that supply blood to the oil glands, to diminish the size and function of the glands. This can help to clear pimples and inflammation. In addition, IPL treatments can improve the appearance of acne scars, redness and dark spots.
