Types of Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is procedure that attempts to improve the appearance of your skin on your face, hands and neck. Generally, an acid solution is applied to the area to be treated with the objective of exfoliating or slough off the outer most layer of skin to remove dead skin cells, and dry, flakey skin to reveal new, softer and smoother skin. It may help with rejuvenating your skin. *individual results may vary.

There are several types of chemical peels that vary in strength and treat different levels of the skin:

1 – The Lunchtime or Superficial Peel

This peel uses Alpha Hydroxy Acid which comes in the form of glycolic acid, fruit acids or lactic acid. They are gentle peels used for mild exfoliation of the outer layer of skin, to help improve the look of mild skin discolorations, smooth rough skin and refresh the skin. These peels may be beneficial to treat acne. These peels only mildly irritate the skin and patients can return to work right away, with makeup. You must wear sunscreen daily to maintain the peel effects and avoid irritating your skin.

2 – The Medium Peel

This peel uses a stronger acid called Glychoic or trichloracetic acid(TCA). It penetrates deeper than Alpha Hydroxy Acid peels, and reaches the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. It can improve the look of age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, superficial blemishes, freckles and moderate skin discolorations. It may also smooth rough skin and might even treat some precancerous growths called actinic keratosis.

3 – The Deep Peel

This peel penetrates the middle layer of skin to reduce damaged cells. The chemical used is called Phenol acid or Trichloracetic Acid(TCA) in a stronger formula than used in a medium peel. This peel will erase moderate lines and wrinkles, age spots, freckles and shallow scars. It may provide a dramatically improved appearance with long-lasting results. It is only used on the face, and can only be performed one time.

1 – The Perfect Derma Peel uses Glutathione, an anti-aging ingredient that is an antioxidant to help increase cell turnover to diminish acne scars. Glutathione is combined with Kojic Acid, Retinoic Acid, Phenol, Salicylic Acid and Vitamin C. Each ingredient has a purpose. Kojic Acid is a lightening agent that is proven to increase collagen and elastin production for brighter and tighter skin. TCH, Phenol and Retinoic Acid helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improves pigmentation. Salicylic Acid exfoliates the skin, unclogs pores and reduces inflammation.

The benefits are:

  • Your skin will be brighter, lighter, and tighter.
  • Your skin tone will even and texture will improve
  • Your pores will appear smaller
  • Your lines and wrinkles will soften
  • Acne and acne scars will be reduced or eliminated
  • New collagen will result in firmer skin

This peel may produce dramatic results with only one treatment.  Additional procedures will provide optimal results. These peels are generally safe and essentially painless, using high quality ingredients. With proper skin care, and maintenance peels the results will be maintained.

2 – The Moderate Chemical Peel uses glycolic and salicylic acid to treat all your concerns about aging and acne. Glycolic acid is gentle and has proven anti-aging effects. It stimulates collagen production and improves fine lines and wrinkles as well as skin tone. Salicylic Acid can help you get rid of pimples.

3 – The Advanced Chemical Peel is designed to address superficial scarring, uneven skin tone, aging lines and wrinkles and acne prone skin. This is a customized peel based on your specific concerns. This peel is not recommended for people of color.

Individual results may vary.

Who is a good candidate for a chemical peel?

You must be in good health, don’t smoke, understand the procedure and have realistic expectations of what it can accomplish. Dark skinned people are not good candidates.

You may not be a good candidate if you cannot refrain from smoking a few weeks before and after your peel. If you take Accutane, and/or have skin infections you are not a good candidate. If you have not taken Accutane in the past year and or year and a half, you may be a candidate.  If you have keloid scarring a different procedure may provide more benefit for you. If you have a heart condition you are not a candidate for a deep chemical peel.

If you have dry, dull skin a peel can quickly rejuvenate your skin. The acids used may help you get less pimples and can unclog pores, and reduce their appearance. At Cary Med Spa and Wellness in Cary, North Carolina, each peel will be formulated specially for your skin type, and skin problems.
